Knowing that the murals would be more powerful with student input, Glynn asked each student to draw a symbol that represented their culture. The results were so beautiful; one student drew a sea turtle, another a mushroom, and yet another a gnome. Glynn incorporated the symbols into the pattern on a curtain fluttering at the top of the painted window scene. By the end of the project, the students opened up and we were able to discuss a myriad of issues affecting them. It was more than the act of painting that encouraged the students to open up- it was also that an adult had trusted them enough to include their ideas directly in the project.
